Heat Press FAQ

The answers to the most frequently asked questions about our heat press machines. More questions? Email us by clicking here.

Why does the upper platen seem loose on my heat press? The platens on all Hotronix heat presses “float” to allow for even pressure from corner to corner during operation. This allows for even application when heat printing.

What are heating elements? The heating elements are coiled throughout the upper platen of the heat press. Spaced no more than 2” apart, ensuring constant heat to provide even temperature edge to edge when heat printing.

Why are Hotronix heat press platens so thick? Our heat platens are ¾” thick, which allows for more insulation so  heat is retained between prints. Once the machine reaches the temperature that has been set, it will never fluctuate more than +/- 2 degrees.

What are interchangeable platens used for? Interchangeable platens make it easy to print items of various sizes, shapes, and styles. The platens can be changed quickly and easily.

What types of temperature devices are used? Our heat presses utilize a platinum coated RTD probe, which is inserted into the top of the heat platen and measures your actual surface temperature. An RTD probe measures temperature within +/– 2 degrees.

Why are the heat platens coated? Our platens have a durable non-stick coating for easy cleaning. In the event a heat transfer product is transferred to the upper platen, a quick wipe-down with a dry cloth will remove any debris.

Why do you use a silicone pad? The silicone pad is refined and retains  heat,  facilitating the flow of inks and adhesives to ensure a good application during the printing process.

Why do you powder coat your machines? Scratch-resistant and more durable than paint, powder coating keeps your machine looking newer, longer.

How do I set the time and date on my Hotronix® heat press? Instructions can be found in the manual for your Hotronix heat press.

What voltage are the Hotronix® heat presses sold in? Hotronix Heat Presses are available in both 110V or 220V.

How can I check the pressure setting on my heat press? Lower the upper platen and lock it into place. Heat presses with a pressure readout will display the setting on the front panel.

How can I make sure my heat press has even pressure? The key to even pressure is the way the upper platen is engineered. A center pressure adjustment, coupled with a floating heat platen ensures a “no-pinch” application result regardless of the thickness of the application substrate. One way to test for even pressure on a press is to put four squares of paper, one in each corner, and close the press. Try to pull out the papers. If one paper comes out easier than the others, it is possible that your platen is warped and not providing even pressure across the platen.

How do I know what setting my machine has for pressure? Most manual machines will not give you a pressure reading. All Hotronix® heat presses have a numeric pressure readout so you know you have the pressure set correctly. Settings from 1-3 are light, 4-6 is medium and 7-9 is firm.

How do I clean the heat platen? It is recommended that you use an abrasive-free mechanics hand soap with a cloth to clean the heat platen.

What power supply do I need to service my new machine? A dedicated 20-amp outlet is recommended for all heat press machines.
